Keep Spooky Safe this Halloween

August 11, 2021

Ghosts, goblins, and all the haunts are on the brain for those in the attractions industry as preparations are underway for the 2021 Halloween season. While COVID reduced Halloween-related attractions and events in 2020, most parks are planning for a hauntingly fun fall.

Here in Ohio, Cedar Fair will be hosting their popular events, HalloWeekends at Cedar Point and Halloween Haunt at Kings Island. Elsewhere in the US, Universal Studios announced the return of Halloween Horror Nights, as well as Disney’s popular After Hours Boo Bash.

Surely the parks are excited to bring back these popular events that draw large crowds, but guest and employee safety will still be on the forefront as pandemic-related concerns remain. Standard social distancing guidelines will be followed, and if parks are observing reduced capacities, they will remain in place for the special events.

Many of the haunted attractions are built-in the existing park infrastructure, but additional structures are also constructed to house the scary fun.  The SafeSpace Occupancy Monitoring Solution can be an effective tool in either scenario during the special season. Our high accuracy sensors, which work in low-lit areas, automatically control the occupancy in particular areas to ensure a safe and fun experience for all guests. Fewer guests will be able to enter attractions at one time due to a reduced cast, so having an accurate and automated solution to control the people flow will let guests experience it as intended.

Additionally, as COVID greatly changed the landscape for all amusement parks, tracking occupancy in these special attractions will assist management in making strategic decisions for 2022 and beyond. An in-depth view of usage can justify the need for more attractions, more cast members, or a change in layouts. Re-learning visitor behavior on the fly is a very difficult task, but our people counting solutions can shorten the learning curve and collect data that can make an impact for years to come.
