Kick Off New Fiscal Year with Campus Foot Traffic Data

For many colleges and universities across the country, July 1 kicked off a brand-new fiscal year. Opening up a new fiscal year with refreshed budgets and revitalized strategies often leads to investments in new technologies. Collecting campus foot traffic data is an example of a technology that can assist universities as they ease back into full capacity in buildings and residential facilities.

SenSource has partnered with several hundred higher education organizations across the US and Canada. Our highly accurate people counting sensors are placed in Student Unions, libraries, office buildings, dining halls, dormitories and athletic facilities. For many universities, the data collected has provided beneficial facility usage information that has been the basis for justification for expansion on campus. Additionally, after analyzing behavior and traffic patterns, building layouts have been altered to better serve the student body.

Data Leads to Better Decisions

As we shared in a recent case study, the Hill Student Center at UAB has been using SenSource people counting technologies to hone their staffing needs and business hours. A dozen sensors installed at all entrances to collected foot traffic data of students’ activities. “Very quickly we started discovering a world of things that were different from our assumptions. For one, how many folks were visiting our facility on a daily, weekly, annual basis. It’s far more than we ever imagined, which is great and helps us advocate for those dollars because we’re impacting a lot of folks throughout the year,” Jeremiah Johnson, Hill Student Center Director, shared.

Start Now – Every Day Counts

Now is the perfect time to make the investment in people counting technologies. The turn of the fiscal calendar means new budgets for investment. And installation can be completed with minimal disruptions due to fewer students on campus.

Behaviors will likely change when students return to campus, in this post-pandemic environment. By collecting campus foot traffic data, you can re-learn student activities, save funds, and provide a real-time occupancy count for those locations that still need to enforce social distancing.
