Adult & Child Counts: People Counting Data Explained

June 10, 2025

Today we’re taking a closer look at a powerful feature of our overhead people counting sensors; the ability to differentiate between adults and children – and why it matters for your data insights.

Let’s dive in!

How It Works

Our devices use advanced stereo video technology. With dual lenses – working just like the human eye – they perceive depth and build a 3D profile of everyone who passes underneath.

Its smart algorithm identifies people based on height and body shape, focusing on the head and shoulder profile. With this information, it accurately classifies traffic as either adult or child.

Depending on your organization’s needs, you can choose to:

  • Track adults and children separately
  • Combine the counts
  • Or exclude children entirely from the data

The customization is available during your account setup, so be sure to discuss it with your account rep.

Why are Child and Adult Counts Important?

At SenSource, we understand that traffic data isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each customer has unique goals they hope to achieve. It’s not just about knowing how many people walked through the door, it’s understanding why the data matters and how it will be used.

Here are few real-world examples:

Libraries – If you’re counting foot traffic to report total facility usage for funding or grant purposes, you’ll likely want to include both adults and children.

Museums – If you want to understand how different children and adults engage with exhibits, a breakdown of your traffic counts can help shape decisions on what type of displays to curate and where to place them.

Retailers – If you’re calculating conversion rate to measure store performance and incentivize managers, you may choose to exclude children, since adult visitors are the ones making purchases.

This level of flexibility ensure your data is meaningful and actionable for your goals.
