Cleveland's Vintage Shop Controls Crowds with Traffic Counting Tech

Industry: Retail

“Brick and Mortar retail stores can still succeed, they are just a little different than ones in the past.” There was no hesitation from Max Quinn, owner of Uncover Vintage, as he discussed the state of retail stores in today’s market. Continually striving to improve and leveraging data to make decisions is how small, boutique style stores can remain relevant. This is what led Uncover Vintage to seek out people counting technologies for their location in Cleveland, Ohio.

Despite opening during a global health crisis, Uncover Vintage hit the ground running and exceeded early expectations. When occupancy regulations were put in place, Quinn needed to react to make sure they could stay open. A search for a real-time occupancy counter led to SenSource’s SafeSpace Occupancy Monitoring, and the sensor based technology was quickly adopted by Uncover Vintage. “Not only were there occupancy restrictions due to COVID to worry about, we also had to look at how we were operating, and we wanted our customer activity to drive any decisions we made.”

While the immediate need of occupancy monitoring was met with SafeSpace, Quinn wanted to maximize his investment in the SenSource People Counting Sensor and software by leveraging the data and analytics collected by SenSource. “Since we were so new, we wanted to allow customer behavior to shape our decisions. Through the foot traffic data collected by the SenSource sensor, we have honed our business hours and “drop days,” which are the days we release new products. We even open on Mondays now after being previously closed, due to the data we were seeing from SenSource.”

We sell unique, one-of-a-kind vintage items. Stuff you can’t really find anywhere else in the world. So it is fun for us to stay ahead of the game and SenSource is helping us do that.” It is paying off for Uncover Vintage as they will be opening their second location in the Cleveland area before the end of the year. “We absolutely will be installing SenSource sensors in our new location so we can cross-compare between the two locations and continue to learn how to improve.

Uncover Vintage Black Friday Monitors Occupancy with SafeSpace

Black Friday is traditionally one of retail’s highest occupancy days of the year. Uncover Vintage owner Max Quinn had the date circled on his calendar since he opened his vintage clothing store in Cleveland earlier this year. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect parts of his business, he was determined to still have a big Black Friday sale. “We wanted to offer up a huge sale as a way to thank our customers for such a great year. I put up the 50% Off Everything sale notice and things exploded. I realized I better come up with a plan to manage the day.”

Uncover Vintage has been a SenSource customer since September, using the SafeSpace Occupancy Monitoring solution to help control occupancy counts inside the store. Max’s decision to bring SenSource into his store is featured in this video.

By the time the dust settled on the night of Black Friday, Max was thankful he had a system in place. “I did my best to keep the line spaced out and everyone wearing masks, but I knew I could control the crowd inside the store with SafeSpace. Some customers waited in line for over an hour, but each and every one of them waited at the door until the tablet told them it was safe to come in. We hit the sensor and system hard all day long on Friday and it was flawless. SafeSpace was a complete lifesaver that helped keep the day running smoothly.”

While Black Friday proved to be the busiest day in the store’s history, Max is convinced it will lead to even better days. “My customers enjoyed the great sale and good inventory, but with everything going on, they felt safe. I was able to communicate easily and effectively when to enter the store and that type of experience will stick with the customers throughout the rest of the pandemic.”

We would like to congratulate Max and his team for a successful Black Friday sale and look forward to helping his shoppers stay safe throughout the holiday shopping season!
